Sincerely Wrong

I honestly think that there are only two reasons why the seeker-sensitive model — and even just calling it a model portrays its true identity, it’s just a business — but there are only two reasons why that model gained dominance.
One: ignorance. And by that I mean a specific type of ignorance. An ignorance that goes back to Billy Graham, for example. It goes back to the white churches during the civil rights era. And it goes back to slave Bibles — and the spirit that allowed even the concept of the slave Bible to exist, much less actually produced one. And this whole mental configuration is summed up in the idea of Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior. Jesus is my personal Lord and Savior. Now I could analyze that till the cows come home, but the fact is it is a label, it is a phrase that this constellation of ideas has chosen to represent itself. And the people in that constellation of ideas either, A, genuinely believe that they need to get as many people as possible to accept Jesus as personal Lord and Savior or those people will be going to hell forever — and that anything that gets them to do that is appropriate. In other words, they’re sincerely wrong.
Or two: pure cynicism. Pure cynicism. They’re out to make a buck.
